Speech Team
The Speech Team is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Being a member of the speech team provides students with a wonderful opportunity to build confidence and poise in making oral presentations in front of an audience, writing a persuasive or informative speech or vocally interpreting a dramatic or humorous narrative. All these are skills that are used in middle school, high school and beyond.
Students make a commitment to come to small group practice sessions an average of at least once a week during speech team season and biweekly team meetings. In addition to those practices, students will be expected to work on their own finding or writing material to present, as well as, preparing and rehearsing on their own. There are two tournaments that are held on Saturdays and go all day.
Both Bishop Blanchet and Seattle Prep high schools award tuition scholarship prizes to 8th-grade winners in several categories: Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Oratory, Editorial Commentary, Impromptu, and Expository.
Our Lady of the Lake relies on parent and parish volunteers as coaches and judges. Judges’ training is available to all interested participants.
