Classroom expectations

OLL middle school students and families,

Below, you'll find my general classroom expectations. I appreciate students and families reviewing these expectations as we start the year. I will leave this document on my class page so you can review it as needed throughout the year.

I expect students to follow three simple rules that, if followed, will create an open and caring classroom for all. As I am a member of this classroom as well, you can expect that I will follow these rules as well.

  1. Be respectful: treat others how you would want to be treated and assume everyone has good intentions
  2. Be responsible: take care of yourself first, own up to your mistakes, and make sure your work gets turned in
  3. Be ready: come to class with everything you need to be successful (mind, body, resources)
Break time/extra help: (ONLINE ONLY)
I will stay online for 10 minutes after the end of each class. This is a good time to ask me individual questions or get help with problems. For problems that may take longer than a few minutes to discuss, students should email me to set up a time to meet online. I'm very flexible with my time, but students need to be proactive and communicate with me.

Late/Absent Work:

If work is turned in past the original due date, it cannot be given full credit; the maximum score available on late work will decrease with each day the assignment is missing:

- 1 day missing = 90% maximum score available, 2 days missing = 80%, 3 days missing = 70%

Work that is 4+ days late can’t receive a passing grade, but it can be turned in to cancel out a “zero” in the grade book. I highly encourage students to take advantage of this policy if needed. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check Google Classroom and/or the homework page for the homework that you missed. If you need more instruction, please check in with me. If you know you will be absent for an extended period of time, please see me before you leave and I can give you work before you leave.

For any large writing assignments or tests, I will allow you to rewrite or retake it in an attempt at a better grade, at my discretion. If you show improvement and progress in your learning, your grade will reflect that progress.

Homework is assigned under the following two circumstances (with some exceptions): 1.) I assign you work to prepare you for a live class. Or, 2.) if an assignment is unfinished during class it becomes homework. It will be your responsibility to read a book for 30 minutes each night.

Our classroom will be a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and engaging place for all students to learn and grow. I will make use of the Parent Communication Form if respectful behavior is not being practiced.

Academic Honesty:

Academic dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form. Any submitted work that exhibits academic dishonesty, or any work that is not entirely your own, will result in an automatic failing grade, and will not be eligible for re-submission.

Leaving the Classroom:

If you need to leave the classroom to use the restroom, get water, or get something from your locker, please make sure you ask first. Students will not leave the classroom, for any reason outside of emergencies, in the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of class.

*Online Class*: Please try and avoid leaving online class as it is only 45 minutes long and you have 15 minute breaks in between class. If it is absolutely necessary to leave online class, please send me a note in the chat.

We will follow the OLL grading scale:

A = 100 - 90%

B = 89 - 80%

C = 79 - 70%

D = 69 - 60%

In general, I will try to provide rubrics for assignments. These rubrics are to help guide you as you complete your assignment and to help you understand how I grade assignments and assessments.
