Thornton Creek Citizen Science
The Thornton Creek Citizen Science Project encourages teams of citizens to monitor the health of the Thornton Creek Watershed. Each week, OLL fourth-graders acquire 3 ml replicate water samples at two sites on Maple Creek, a tributary of the watershed. Students determine the levels of E. coli occurring on Maple Creek. They also record the air and water temperature, creek depth, and stream velocity. In addition, they record precipitation throughout the week at the site-specific rain gauges. Once the data has been gathered, this information is uploaded to Seattle Public Utilities so that scientists there can make informed decisions concerning restoration efforts on the watershed.
