3 June 2009

Dear Laker Families,

We have a busy last full week of school. As the year comes to a close, please be sure to take note of some upcomng events.

  • 8th grade graduation this Wednesday evening at 7PM. All are welcome to join us for this.
  • Mrs. Boyle's retirement party is this Sunday following the 9:30Mass. The reception will be in the school gym.
  • Noon dismissal next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Our teachers will be in staff meetings and in-service these afternoons. Thursday, June 11 at 9:30 is our end of year prayer service. 10:30 dismissal.

Going home with your child's report card next week will be our last family letter. The 2009-10 calendar and supply list will be available online by June 19. As I mentioned in prior letters, school will begin on August 31.

There is a staffing addition that I'd like to announce for next year. Gail Schalk will coordinate our school speech program. Gail is a grandmother of three OLL students and a former Seattle Public teacher. Gail brings an incredible working knowledge of curriculum integration to the school. The second hiring has to do with the area of middle school math. Ms. Julia Thomas has been hired to teach a 7th and an 8th grade math class next year. Ms. Thomas is a parent of a Bishop Blanchet student and a graduate of Stanford with a background in science and math. Julia is also a writer and researcher. Welcome aboard Gail and Julia!

We also will have a slight change for next year's 8th grade students only. School will begin at 8:05 AM for 8th graders. Their first class will be math and go from 8:05-9:10. The rest of the students will start at 8:20AM. The teachers are working on the student schedules this week and next. There will be some changes to the schedule as there is every school year. Working on the school schedule is a quite the project since there are many factors we need to take into account. The bottom line is to create a schedule that works for the students and teachers. The schedule should take into account what is best for the students and their academic needs.

Thank you for all you do.
